Thanks to yoni for this article! I'm also using an ATOM 330 for the purpose of downloading 24/7. The stupid northbridge chipset fan sounds like a jetplane in the mini-itx casing. Yesterday the fan finally stop working (a blessing in disguise) and i took the plunge and install a CoolerMaster northbridge chipset passive heatsink. (ref: http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/custom...at=0&page=) So now, it is running fanless(except for the PSU fan) and the temperature is still within acceptable limits and i'm monitoring it closely. I've actually wanted to install another fan to the inside of the casing to draw air-in, but the vent holes of the casing is too small for the screw needed to hold the fan to the side. Maybe i'll try double sided tape later. (IMG:http://windowsedge.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I'm chinese also btw, but am from Malaysia. Happy Chinese New Year guys! Hey Matrix, Welcome to WindowsEdge! I have found a great value in this little Atom PC. I'm actually running it as a Home Server and it is playing several roles in my LAN. Let me list some of them: 1- I use MagicJack as my home phone service so the jack is connected to the server. 2- FPT server 3- Web Server 4- Webmail Server 5- Torrents Server 6- VPN Server 7- Backup Server 8- GhostCast Server 9- Remote Access 10- Print Server 11- Proxy Server to have control over my workstations and laptops Internet browsing as well as the monthly bandwidth usage. (Remember to set up cache on the proxy if you have only few PCs in your network. It will make your internet browsing way faster). Between others... This is how far I have pushed it. Glad it has also worked for you. By the way, Newegg has a great UPS for $179 that will juice up your Atom for over an hour (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842102048) I have my modem, router, Phone and Server connected to it)... Cheers! |

Hey, guys I haven't made any comments about Windows 7 as of yet. I'm still holding my breath until it gets finally released. Even though I have been running it for quite a while. In the mean time, I have just ordered some parts to build a new box for this release. Nothing special, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, 500GB SataII HDD, in an ITX form factor case. Let's share few comments: Speed: Users seem to like Windows 7. Many named it "Vista made right". It is clearly performing faster than its predecessor; Vista. Additionally, Windows XP also happens to fall right behind it in several tests. Redmond has being working hard under the hood to deliver the so promised performance boost that many users never saw with Vista. They're making efforts with Windows 7 to have it accommodate parallel processing better and take more advantage of today's multi-core CPUs in order to gain more performance for the operating system and its applications "which is somehow happening". Even though, that's something I refuse to accept entirely and that's the reason why I never buy the latest and greatest processors in the market (I'm pointing at the new Intel Core i7 here (IMG:http://windowsedge.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) . The problem with dual core, triple core, quad core and other multi-core processors is that software can rarely take full advantage of them. Because of the way software is being designed today, there are very good chances that when one core runs a certain part of the software's code, and another core runs a different part, if the two parts are dependent on each other, one of them will fail if the other one doesn't finish on time. Networking: (It is becoming more and more remarkable as home users implement home servers, NAS devices, file sharing and backups) Windows 7 aims to be the most wanted Windows version ever. Configuring your home network has never been easier as it appears with a feature called Home Group, that sets up a home network very easily. Network performance is another big plus. GUI: Nobody has made any serious comments in what graphic user interface concerns. Pretty much Windows 7 is still in Beta and Aero with it's 3D is nothing new. There are few cosmetic and functional changes that only time will tell how useful and acceptable they will be (the new revamped taskbar, Aero peak, jump lists, etc. just to mention a few). I dare to talk about them here because they are features that entirely relay in the way users will be interacting with the PC adding few changes to the GUI we've seen in previous versions of Windows. As it is I can only say the new Beta is somewhat usable, incomplete and promising. Upgrading from XP is still not even being tested and that's something I would like to do myself. Windows XP holds over 60% of the market share and it shouldn't be simply ignored. The company I work for has completely skipped Windows Vista as many others out there. We ended up reconsidering the amount of workforce and inversions we had to implement in order to upgrade to Vista versus waiting for the next MS operating system. Still there are very few comments in our IT department whether (if) we will upgrade to 7 or just divide the entire network in to main segments: Old and stable Windows XP and New and unknown Windows 7. I guess only time will tell. Cheers Yoni |

Yoni, Very nice article. I have been contemplating building a system such as this using the same mobo but maybe a different (smaller) case. Just a quick question 'cause I think that I am missing something here. How is this fanless if you are still using the PSU fan? Sorry for my ignorance but doesn't it make noise? Thanks Hi Lidrummer, I believe you are correct. The system is not fully fanless because there is still a fan in the PSU. The good thing is that you can hardly hear the fan even with your ears next to the case. I was trying to focus on the fan included with the Atom 330 which is extremely noisy. |

hello! It is the first time for me to speak at the foreign forum! I am a Chinese student,I major in computer.I think Atom 330 is too expensive for me,and a Core 2 is enough for my usage. Hi jingru welcome to Windows Edge. Let me ask you, is the D945GCLF2 (Atom 330) more expensive than a Core 2 Duo there in China? Greetings from the other side of the sea (IMG:http://windowsedge.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

i prefer Core 2 Extreme QX9xxx anyway, but they are so expensive! Well, you have to consider they are completely two different products. Intel is offering a low end/low wattage consumption processor soldered into a motherboard with onboard GPU that allows you to build a basic PC on a budget. (Price is @ $90 US on retailers). This is a perfect solution for average users that don't do much on their systems other than browsing the Internet, check e-mails, listen to music, watch DVD movies, youtube and myspace. |

Yes, it run fanless! Hi guys, The new Atom 330 announced by Intel to hit the market in the fourth quarter of the year is slowly popping up at few retailer's stores. Personally, I've been waiting for this new version for some time now and I feel I did the right thing holding my breath for this long. QUOTE Intel Atom is the brand name for a line of x86 and x86-64 CPUs (or microprocessors) from Intel, previously code-named Silverthorne and Diamondville processors, designed for a 45 nm CMOS process and intended for use in ultra-mobile PCs, smart phone and other portable and low-power applications. Wikipedia The D945GCLF2 Intel ITX motherboard features (Atom 330 Dual Core) nothing else but 2 x 1.6GHz CPUs soldered into the small motherboard that max out at 8W power consumption and it is "fast enough" for basic/office applications and web browsing. Check out the specifications for the D945GCLF2: Mini-ITX form factor 6.75"x6.75" Dual Core Intel Atom processor one 240 pin DIMM socket supporting 533/667MHz single channel DDR2 up to 2GB in size Intel 945GC chipset: 82945GC Northbridge with integrated graphics, 82801GB ICH7 Southbridge GMA 950 integrated graphics S-Video output via Chrontel CH7021A SDTV/HDTV encoder RealTek ALC662 codec with HDA and 6 channel audio SPDIFF header on motherboard one PCI slot 8 USB2.0 ports (4 on back panel, 4 on two headers) one IDE interface two SATA2 interfaces one VGA connector one S-Video port one parallel port one serial port PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports Intel BIOS with SMBIOS support, Rapid BIOS boot, Express BIOS Update Gigabit Ethernet ACPI support, Wake on USB, PCI, PS/2, Lan supports Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows XP Home and Pro, 32 bit and 64 bit People have said good and bad things about the Atom 330 Dual Core version. I have few complains that I'll share with you later on... Let's take a look at the motherboard (Sorry I couldn't find my camera before sinking this little ITX motherboard into the case.) The little and NOISY fan is actually on the northbridge but we already know it will be replaced to make it dead silent (read fanless). (IMG:http://windowsedge.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) (IMG:http://images.windowsedge.com/pics/886d0a7b9ab117b54fcc84391d891c13.JPG) Critics have pointed fingers at Intel for "screwing up" with the 945GC chipset. It really makes no sense when you have an 8W CPU but a chipset that consumes 20-25W on its own AND it gets worst when you have to dedicate a fan (a noisy one, let me add) to keep the chipset "cool enough". This is not new, the controversy started long ago with the Atom 230 launch. A Google search will give you a better idea of what we are talking about here. I read about the unwelcome-noisy chipset fan this motherboard features on many sites before I started planning my own build and waiting for the new version to finally show up on the market as well. Planning and researching, that's all it takes. Using an APEX MI-100 Black Steel Mini-ITX Computer Case with a 250W Power Supply I was able to throw a low-end heatsink at this chipset in order o run it fanless. The case helped a lot let me tell you. The Power Supply fan included on this case sits right on top of the chipset heatsink allowing to dissipate the heat from the chipset while it is blown throughout the power supply unit. So, can it really run fanless? Yes, sure it does. I've been running this PC since yesterday (Windows Vista 32 Bit) and it hasn't lag a little bit nor a signal of overheating. Let me add that the chipset's heatsink will feel warm to the touch, specially after playing DVD movies, but I can keep my finger on it without getting burned. That's how hot it gets (Just trying to give you an idea). How long will it hold? - Time will tell me. Another thing I should mention is that this ITX system is dead quiet! (fanless = dead quiet). Additionally, there are thousand of good chipset heatsinks that will do better than the one I threw on my case and there is enough room on the APEX MI-100 to go for any of them. Oh, by the way, it runs Mac OSX Leopard just fine (OSX86 guys will love it I guess). I'll owe you few screenshots though. Maybe next time... As a Home Server, I can't complain. It gets the job done, small foot-print and plenty of space for me to throw at least 2 x 1TB HDD more, giving me almost 3TB in total storage pool/ file replication. Windows Home Server has a new Home (IMG:http://windowsedge.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Cheers |

Well, I couldn't resist it and I had to keep one of these systems for myself. Pushed the processor and RAM a little bit considering the high quality parts included in those systems and I was able to take the processor to 3.12GHz with just a little bump in RAM and CPU voltage. Ran CPU StabTest for 13 hours and didn't receive any warnings not a single crash (IMG:http://windowsedge.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) The only down side is that with the stock fan temps went up to 55C (I'm gonna replace the stock heat sink soon though just to be safe) Check it out! System Overclocking 20% HT Link 1200 MHz! (I have seen it @1900MHz and higher) I believe I need to toy with voltage a little bit more to see if I can take this baby up to 3.4 GHz) RAM 445.8MHz! Doubled is 891.6MHz (I love Kingston Memory) (IMG:http://images.windowsedge.com/pics/e515bbdcd9406daabffa36c37a45ceaa.jpg) (IMG:http://images.windowsedge.com/pics/67bcd429cbaf5f1c8cf29a4484dedf5c.jpg) (IMG:http://images.windowsedge.com/pics/66361b6218aa00923f8d78fb8a3e1e33.jpg) (IMG:http://images.windowsedge.com/pics/9cde0b7c91c17f86a5bf35b631e9eddc.jpg) (IMG:http://images.windowsedge.com/pics/619079b3c8026c3aa44732165d385da0.jpg) |

Some software will fall in the grey area where people need - or they think they need - certain features of the software but it causes them grief by causing system slowdown or instability. Although we can technically define Malware, Spyware, or Adware as Crapware because it’s software that people definitely don’t want, those three typically get put in to the category of Malware. Almost 70% of Notebooks out there run Nvidia. This is clearly not something they would like to talk much about. The worst thing is that Nvidia is blaming manufacturers such as HP and Dell and lastly they are also pointing to their customers. I have two HP Pavilion DV6327CL that I'm sending back to HP. They overheat, most of the time they will not post and I have to do several hard boots to make them boot up. The funny thing is that I can work with them as long as I keep them on top of the air conditioner conducts I have at home. In these specific models (line), HP provided their customers with a "BIOS update" that supposedly fix the overheating issue. Basically they forced the fan to run all the time to try to prevent further overheating. That's unacceptable though. As mentioned before it didn't fix anything. It simply made the failure took longer (hopefully after customers warranty has expired) (IMG:http://windowsedge.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) at a terrible battery cost. |

This also came out few days ago: Kris Kaspersky, author of numerous books on reverse engineering and software engineering, will be presenting hisKris Kaspersky research on remote code execution through Intel CPU bugs at the upcoming Hack in the Box Security Conference in Malaysia. If his proof of concept code consisting of JavaScript or TCP/IP packet attacks on Intel based machines succeeds, given Intel’s dominant market share on the market the potential outbreak could be enormous since as he claims, the PoC is OS independent, namely all operating systems running Intel chips are said to be vulnerable. Here’s an abstract from his upcoming presentation : “Intel CPUs have exploitable bugs which are vulnerable to both local and remote attacks which works against any OS regardless of the patches applied or the applications which are running. In this presentation, I will share with the participants the finding of my CPU malware detection research which was funded by Endeavor Security. I will also present to the participants my improved POC code and will show participants how it’s possible to make an attack via JavaScript code or just TCP/IP packets storms against Intel based machine. Some of the bugs that will be shown are exploitable via common instruction sequences and by knowing the mechanics behind certain JIT Java-compilers, attackers can force the compiler to do what they want (for example: short nested loops lead to system crashes on many CPUs). I will also share with the participants my experience in data recovery and how CPU bugs have actually contributed in damaging our hard drives without our knowledge. “ Intel will be keeping an eye on his upcoming research : “George Alfs, a spokesman for Intel, said he has not yet seen Kaspersky’s research, nor has he spoken to him about it. “We have evaluation teams always looking at issues. We’ll certainly take a look at this one,” said Alfs. “All chips have errata, and there could be an issue that needs to be checked. Possibly. We’d have to investigate his paper.” BIOS based rootkits are nothing new with John Heasman’s research into Implementing and Detecting a PCI Rootkit, published in 2006. And with the possibility of malware hiding at the lowest possible level already a fact, what will be very interesting to monitor is a universal remote code execution based on chip’s manufacturer. Everything is possible, the impossible just takes a little longer. source: blogs.zdnet.com |

Could you please stay out of this? thank you. I dont know what you are talking about. I wasn't tiring to start anything, just stating my opinion. Its alright for him to go on and on but for others like my self it isnt? I just know from the past he like to brag and said he got "windows 7" or something along those lines and then laugh it off. So I dobut he really has it, just by the way he posts his posts. So I cant post my opinion with out you giving us an lucture and an member budding in? I'm not arguing, I'm just saying what I think. I'll probley be critzied on this post to. You've delt with worse before, so this is nothing. gonzc900, It might be me but I have the feeling I clearly understand what's happening here. We haven't prohibited you to state your opinion and you are free to share your thoughts as long as you don't disrespect other members. I believe you should consider the fact I wasn't directing my post to only you and I also believe you are the only one going on and on. By the way, nobody is arguing here and even when we have dealt with worse before it doesn't mean we should ignore such behavior. Since we have made from this thread an unproductive source of information I am now closing it. If you have further questions regarding this thread please feel free to contact me by using our PM system. Greetings, Yoni Topic Closed |

I don't know why but my first experience with Windows 7 has been nothing else but explorer.exe has stopped working. I'll have to get into the logs to see what's causing it to crash (IMG:http://windowsedge.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/mellow.gif) |

Hi caretaker, What kind of error are you getting? Are you able to start the installation from the DVD? There may be few things in the CMOS Setup configuration that could be preventing you from going throughout the installation process. Virtualization, System Bios Cacheable, etc. Is is a blue screen of death during install? Is it hardware related? Have you tried any other OS installation in that system. Let's say Windows Vista, etc. |

Firstly Yoni thank you for an amazing dock..... I can't explain how happy I was when I found out that you released the RK Launcher 0.41. I first found out about docks when I purchased a pc format mag which had the rocketdock on the software cd, then a couple days later I found the object dock. Again a couple days later I found the RK Launcher 0.4 BETA 1.69. I'm not sure if anyone has done this but I've got 10 of the 1.69 versions on my machine and they work like a charm with different shortcuts and they don't clash. With Rocketdock and Objectdock you can't do this. I put 1 dock to start at windows startup and then put shortcuts to the 10 RK Docks giving me access to my web design programes, system utilities, media, nero etc... all applications that I use alot. I don't know how I would've got by without them. Now you made the RK 0.41 and I must say the kkmenu ROCKS. It's a pleasure to use. I've registered to say thank you and to say I'm happy to be apart of your community. Once again THANK YOU and a JOB WELL DONE. Regards Porn Star (IMG:http://windowsedge.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:http://windowsedge.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:http://windowsedge.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Wow! Glad it worked for you. Thanks for taking the time to join us and give some feedback. We are not the coders of RK Launcher. Raduking owns RKLauncher's full copyright. We simply asked him for permission to fine tune it and freely distribute it. He was very kind by allowing us to do so. We basically added icons, docklets, tune it up and compiled the installer for easier distribution and installation. If anyone deserves credits for RK Launcher that's Raduking. Humm... I wonder if this will extend the memory card's life... It shouldn't make a difference at all. You will be using your system's memory modules just the same way you have used it up to date. The only difference here is that instead of using a flash drive to allocate the cache you will be loading that cache into your system's memory. Isn't that the fastest cache device we can find out there today? (IMG:http://windowsedge.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

Squiz your system's RAM! It has been a while since we tweak Firefox and Internet Explorer to pump up our browsing speed. Yes, it is worth it dedicating 60-70 MB of your PC's available RAM to get that extra boost while surfing the Internet. Looking at my own system RAM usage I realized that doesn't matter how many applications I run simultaneously I never use the 2GB RAM I have dropped into the case. So, why not loading as many things into memory and take advantage of the unused RAM in my system? Here is what I did (just in case you would like to give it a try and see how much responsive your system may become) The RAM Disk application we used to speed up Firefox and Internet Explorer, also offers options to create (simulate) a Fixed Media and a Removable Media by allocating a segment of random access memory (RAM) as secondary storage which is similar to hard disks as we already know. Creating a Removable Media with RAM Disk will give us the chance to trick Ready Boost into thinking we have an additional Removable Media in our system allowing us to cache all those small I/Os into memory! The dumb rule will always apply here as well: If you don't have enough memory RAM available do not waste your time trying this tweak as you will do nothing but hurting your system's performance. 2GB RAM seems to be a pretty decent amount of memory to handle Windows Vista. Memory RAM is not expensive now days and with prices like these I hope not to receive much critics about how I'm sacrificing RAM for the hell of tweaking. At the end, as I mentioned before, I never use all RAM available in my system. Not anymore! Install RAM Disk and set it up according to your needs and/or your system's available RAM. (IMG:http://images.windowsedge.com/pics/9dacae96ac1faf1813b056693d2019e0.jpg) Click Apply, OK and you should be ready to set up Ready Boost in the new Removable Media you have just created. In the screenshot below you will notice I'm only using @900MB for Ready Boost, the rest is being used for Firefox and Internet Explorer browsing cache. (IMG:http://images.windowsedge.com/pics/ce20a173a9b238f285c7845b515627e7.JPG) Don't forget to give Internet Explorer a try after moving the Temporary Files into the RamDisk Removable Media. I'm sure you will be fascinated. Yoni |
